WAU – In the heart of Western Bahr El Ghazal, the Wau Teaching Hospital (WTH) has emerged as more than just a medical facility; it is a lifeline for millions. As the premier tertiary healthcare institution in the region, WTH serves as a critical referral hub for residents of Western Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap, Lakes, Northern Bahr El Ghazal, and the Abyei Administrative Area.
Under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, the hospital is currently navigating a pivotal shift through the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP). This government-led initiative—generously funded by the World Bank and supported by UNICEF, WHO, and partners like Cordaid—aims to streamline and enhance healthcare delivery across South Sudan.
While the HSTP involves the strategic restructuring of some local facilities, Wau Teaching Hospital has stepped up to fill the resulting gaps. Despite the increased pressure, the hospital’s dedicated staff continues to provide 24/7 essential services to a growing patient base.
Wau Teaching Hospital remains committed to providing high-quality, accessible care. Currently, the facility offers a wide array of services, including:
- Emergency & Trauma Care: Critical life-saving interventions.
- Specialized Clinics: Dedicated departments for Eye, Dental, and ENT care.
- Maternal & Child Health: Comprehensive maternity, obstetric, and pediatric services.
- Surgical Excellence: General and orthopedic surgeries.
- Diagnostics & Pharmacy: Full-scale laboratory, radiology, and on-site pharmaceutical support.
- Outreach: Community health education and preventative programs.
"The healthcare workers have been incredibly helpful," shared Josephine Akello, a recent patient in the maternity ward. "All the medications I needed were available here; I didn’t have to purchase anything from the town."
Beyond clinical care, Wau Teaching Hospital is a cornerstone of medical education in South Sudan. Dr. Bulis Lawrence Ndenge, Director General of WTH, emphasizes that capacity building is at the core of their mission.
The hospital serves as the primary training ground for students from the University of Bahr El Ghazal (UBG) and various regional health institutes. Dr. Angelo James Marcelo, a pediatrician at the hospital, noted the scale of this impact:
"Over 3,000 medical students are receiving practical training here. This not only enhances their professional skills but provides vital support to our wards."
The road ahead is not without its hurdles. Dr. Bulis Lawrence anticipates that patient volume could reach 1,000 daily, potentially tripling during the rainy season. However, the Ministry of Health, through the HSTP and the unwavering resilience of the WTH staff, remains prepared.
Wau Teaching Hospital stands as a testament to what can be achieved through dedicated service and international partnership. It remains a beacon of hope, ensuring that quality healthcare is not a luxury, but a right for all citizens in the Bahr El Ghazal region.
