Juba | 12 June 2025 – Ministry of Health Launches National Nutrition Policy to Combat Malnutrition in South Sudan
In a significant step towards a healthier future for all its citizens, the Ministry of Health, Republic of South Sudan, officially launched the National Malnutrition Policy. This landmark policy underscores the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating malnutrition and fostering resilience across the nation.
The launch event, held in Juba, saw the presence of key dignitaries and stakeholders, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving this crucial initiative. Her Excellency Josephine Joseph Lagu, Vice President and Chair of the Service Cluster, formally announced the policy, emphasizing the profound impact of malnutrition on national development and the urgent need for comprehensive intervention.
"Malnutrition remains a critical challenge in South Sudan, affecting countless lives and hindering our progress as a nation," stated H.E. Josephine Joseph Lagu. "This National Malnutrition Policy is a testament to our collective determination to address this issue head-on, ensuring every South Sudanese has equitable access to the nutrition they need to thrive."
The National Minister of Health, Hon. Sarah Cleto Rial, further elaborated on the policy's strategic approach. She stressed the importance of integrating the nutrition department into existing health structures and fostering robust collaboration with various national and international stakeholders. This multi-sectoral approach is designed to ensure that efforts to combat malnutrition are cohesive, efficient, and far-reaching, touching every aspect of community life – from food security and sanitation to education and healthcare.
A vital component of the newly launched policy is the pre-service nutrition curriculum. This innovative curriculum is specifically designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of the nutrition workforce in South Sudan. By integrating comprehensive nutrition training into existing health and education systems, the Ministry aims to build a highly capable and dedicated cadre of professionals who can deliver effective nutrition services across the country. This will lead to improved service delivery, better health outcomes, and ultimately, a more resilient population.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with its partners, is confident that the National Malnutrition Policy will serve as a transformative framework, guiding national efforts to create a South Sudan where malnutrition is no longer a barrier to human potential. We call upon all citizens, communities, and partners to join hands with us in implementing this vital policy and building a healthier, more prosperous nation.
