Juba, South Sudan - September 11, 2024 - The National Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Christian Blind Mission (CBM), is thrilled to announce the launch of the first-ever pediatric unit at Buluk Eye Center in Juba!
This groundbreaking initiative, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, aims to significantly reduce the need for referrals abroad for pediatric eye care. With a target of reducing referrals by 80%, the unit will focus on complex cases like retinoblastoma, while offering comprehensive eye care services for all children, including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
The "Bright Side" project goes beyond the pediatric unit. Through partnerships with state ministries of health, NGOs, and donors, it aims to address preventable blindness and visual impairment across South Sudan, particularly in underserved communities.
Massimo Maggio, CEO of CBM Italy, highlighted the project's commitment to partnerships for sustainable development. He expressed his gratitude to all contributors and called for continued efforts to improve global eye care.
"This project stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when organizations join forces with a common goal," stated Mr. Maggio. "Our partnership with the Ministry of Health, state ministries of health in Central Equatoria, AlX, the Italian Agency for International Cooperation, implementing partner CORDAID, and Buluk Eye Center embodies the spirit of cooperation, innovation, and compassion that lies at the heart of sustainable development."
The National Minister of Health, Honorable Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, expressed her delight at the project's launch and extended her heartfelt appreciation to the project's supporters.
"Our immense gratitude goes to the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and CBM for their generous funding of the Bright Side Project," proclaimed Hon. Yolanda Awel. "Having the first pediatric eye center in the country, well-equipped and staffed by skilled personnel, will significantly reduce the burden on parents seeking specialized eye care for their children."
Established in the early 1980s by the Kuwaiti government, Buluk Eye Center has evolved into a leading center for eye care services in South Sudan. The center offers a wide range of services, including laser treatment for diabetes, and receives patients from across the nation and neighboring countries. Notably, Buluk Eye Center performs 50-75 surgeries weekly and provides free services to children and people with disabilities.
The launch of the pediatric unit marks a significant milestone in South Sudan's healthcare landscape. With advanced technology and a skilled team, the unit promises to revolutionize pediatric eye care in the country, creating a brighter future for countless children.
