Juba, South Sudan- 5th September 2024 — At an event hosted by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Juba, the National Minister of Health, Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, awarded certificates of honour to the 11th batch of the Chinese medical team and welcomed the new 12th batch.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is proud to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the 11th Batch of the Chinese Medical Team in South Sudan. At a ceremony held on September 5th, 2024, in Juba, the National Minister of Health, Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, presented certificates of honor to the departing team and welcomed the incoming 12th Batch.

The 11th Batch arrived in South Sudan a year ago and made a significant impact at Juba Teaching Hospital. Their dedication went beyond patient care. They actively trained local medical staff, fostering knowledge exchange and skill transfer. Additionally, they embraced the local culture by learning the language, strengthening the bond between our nations.

The Chinese medical team's presence coincided with a period of significant expansion at Juba Teaching Hospital. Their collaboration played a crucial role in achieving global healthcare standards. Notably, the construction of the new accident and emergency complex and the obstetrics and gynecology department stand as testaments to this shared success. With further expansion plans in the works, the Chinese government's support is invaluable.

As we welcome Batch 12, we emphasize the importance of ongoing mutual learning and cooperation. Juba Teaching Hospital remains committed to sending medical staff to China for further training. We also seek to expand these opportunities for continuous skill development.

Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng expressed her deepest gratitude for the unwavering support extended by China. She highlighted the benefits of the Chinese medical team's presence, including improved healthcare delivery, skills exchange, and cultural understanding.

"We are deeply appreciative of the strong ties between our nations," Minister Yolanda stated. "President Kiir's recent visit to China for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation underscores our commitment to collaboration, particularly in the medical field."

The Ministry of Health is confident that Batch 12 will build upon the achievements of the previous teams. Over the next year, they will provide medical services at Juba Teaching Hospital and contribute to healthcare delivery in other states.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including:

  • Hon. Dr. Harriet Akelo Pasquale, MoH Undersecretary

  • Hon. Ma Wenjun, Chargé d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Juba

  • Dr. Anthony Lupai Simon, Director General of Juba Teaching Hospital

  • Dr. Chen Si, Head of the 11th Chinese Medical Team

  • Dr. Du Changyong, Head of the 12th Batch of China Medical Team in South Sudan

We express our sincere gratitude to the 11th Batch and extend a warm welcome to Batch 12. Together, we continue strengthening South Sudan's healthcare system for a healthier future for all.
