Juba, July 1st, 2024 – Hon. Minister Yolanda Awel Deng discussed the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP), which is being funded in part by Canada's generous support
The Republic of South Sudan Minister of Health, Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, hosted Mr. Aly-khan Rajani, the Canadian Ambassador to South Sudan, to discuss the strengthening of their healthcare partnership.
The meeting focused on the commencing Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) and Canada's investment in South Sudan's healthcare sector, with a particular emphasis on supporting the health rights of women and girls.
"I had a very productive meeting with H.E. Ambassador Aly-Khan. As we know, Canada is our fourth-largest donor for the country's health sector, and today's meeting was exceptionally fruitful," said Hon. Awel. "We discussed the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP), which is being funded in part by Canada's generous support."
Recently, the Canadian government approved a $15 million investment in South Sudan's health sector through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This funding will focus on addressing the root causes of barriers to sexual and reproductive health services and rights.
"We discussed Canada's long-standing investment in the health sector in South Sudan, with a particular focus on supporting the health and rights of women and girls, totaling over 300 million Canadian dollars since independence," said Ambassador Aly-khan. "I equally thanked the Honourable Minister for her advocacy efforts on increasing the allocation to the health sector."
The strengthened partnership between South Sudan and Canada aims to drive transformative change in the country's healthcare system, with a strong emphasis on empowering women and girls and ensuring equitable access to essential services.
