Heatwave Impacting South Sudan: Measures Taken to Protect Public Health

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is issuing a public health advisory regarding the current heatwave impacting most regions of South Sudan. According to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, this extreme weather event is expected to last for at least two weeks, with temperatures reaching highs of 41°C to 45°C.

The MoH's disease surveillance department has identified cases of heat-related deaths in South Sudan and is actively monitoring the situation. We urge the public to strictly follow the health advisories issued on March 15, 2024. These advisories provide guidance on:

  • Keeping your home cool
  • Staying hydrated and cool yourself
  • Helping others at risk
  • Managing existing health conditions during the heatwave
  • Recognizing and responding to signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke

Protecting Children and Vulnerable Populations

This heatwave poses a significant health risk, particularly for children, especially young learners, and adults with underlying health conditions. To mitigate these risks and protect public health, the government has implemented the following measures:

  1. School Closures: All schools in South Sudan will be closed effective Monday, March 18, 2024.
  2. Parental Guidance: During the school closure, parents are advised to:
    • Restrict children from playing outdoors during peak heat hours.
    • Closely monitor children, particularly young ones, for signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

State Implementation and Ongoing Monitoring

State authorities are directed to ensure the implementation of these measures outlined in this press release. Any school found operating during the closure period will face registration withdrawal.

The MoH, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to the public.

For detailed health advisories, please refer to the Ministry of Health's public pronouncements issued on March 15, 2024.
