Juba Teaching Hospital Expansion and Modernization Project Launched

15th July, 2024 - Juba, South Sudan – The expansion and modernization of Juba Teaching Hospital
The Republic of South Sudan Minister of Health, Honourable Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony today to officially launch the commencement of phase two construction for the expansion and modernization of Juba Teaching Hospital.
The event was attended by several high-ranking government officials, including His Excellency Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, Vice President and Chair of the Services Cluster, the Minister of Interior Honorable Angelina Jiany Teny, China's ambassador to South Sudan His Excellency Ma Qiang, and the Governor of Central Equatoria State Honorable Jadala Augustino Wani.
When completed in mid-2027, the second phase of this 2.3-hectare (16,000 square meter) project will add a six-block complex to the hospital. This will include a specialist outpatient department, inpatient wards, pediatric facilities, surgery units, imaging and X-ray labs, a technology department, operating theaters, an infectious diseases department, and an administration building.
In his remarks, Chinese ambassador Ma Qiang reaffirmed his country's commitment to supporting South Sudan's healthcare sector through initiatives like the Belt and Road framework. "The China-aided Phase Two expansion and modernization of Juba Teaching Hospital will further strengthen bilateral cooperation and solidify the friendship between our nations," he stated.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Hon. Dr. Harriet Pasquale, highlighted the progress made on healthcare projects with China's support, thanking partners and hospital staff for their contributions to this latest endeavor.
Minister of Health Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng Juach emphasized the importance of local ownership and sustainability in infrastructure development, calling on all stakeholders to take collective responsibility for maintaining public facilities. "The expansion and modernization of Juba Teaching Hospital is a critical investment in our nation's healthcare system," she said. "It is our shared duty to ensure this facility serves the people of South Sudan for generations to come."
In his closing remarks, Vice President Akol expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their partnership. He also commended the Ministry of Health leadership and technical team for their outstanding efforts in realizing this transformative project. "This project will not only enhance healthcare services, but also contribute to the overall improvement of our social services infrastructure," Akol stated.
The new building, to be constructed by China State Construction Engineering Company, is scheduled for completion within the next three years.
