Mpox Outbreak Confirmed in South Sudan

Juba, 07 February 2025 – Mpox Outbreak Confirmed in South Sudan

 

The National Ministry of Health has announced an outbreak of Mpox in South Sudan. This confirmation follows laboratory testing conducted by the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) on February 6, 2025.

 

The index case is a 31-year-old foreign national residing at Kupuri Camp in Luri Payam, Juba. The individual presented with symptoms consistent with Mpox, including fever, rash, and itching, with symptom onset occurring on January 22, 2025.

 

Investigations have revealed that the individual recently traveled to Uganda, a country that has been experiencing an ongoing Mpox outbreak since 2024. The strain of the virus identified in this case is consistent with the strain currently circulating in East Africa.

 

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a viral zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. Transmission to humans can occur through contact with infected animals, particularly rodents. Human-to-human transmission is also possible through direct contact with the characteristic rash or bodily fluids of an infected individual, or through contact with contaminated materials such as bedding.
