Ministry of Health and Partners Sign World Malaria Day with Launch of National Bed Net Distribution
JUBA, South Sudan, 25th April, 2025 — Taking a united stand against one of the country’s most longstanding health challenges, the National Ministry of Health and its partners celebrated World Malaria Day with the launch of an enormous distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in Gurei, Juba. The milestone marks a critical step in South Sudan’s national health strategy to ensure that every household has the tools to prevent transmission and save lives.
The launch of Gurei marks the first step in a nationwide move to take malaria intervention right up to the grassroots level. Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan Teny, Health Minister, took pride in the ceremony, saying traditional diligence alongside modern techniques are critical to stay ahead of the disease. "These nets have a very important role in reducing transmission rates and protecting our communities. It is imperative to have innovation for our health responses to outsmart this parasite."
Reflecting on the need for continued momentum, Hon. Undersecretary Dr. Oromo Francis Seriano spoke to the gathering, saying the fight against malaria is far from over. He said World Malaria Day was more than a reminder — it would help spur future action. “This is a time when we need to redouble our commitment and action,” said Dr. Seriano. “The fight against malaria is on the ground, and requires the government, our partners, and all South Sudanese in contributing to a healthier South Sudan.”
Wanted to bring attention to one of the world’s deadliest diseases, which has been known to exist for decades and is still a deadly infection, everyone is happy and grateful to know people of all ages see you! World Malaria Day is celebrated on the 25th of April every year in order to shine a light on a deadly disease that is still being fought and killed, but is mostly preventable.
What it is: Malaria is caused by parasites spread by the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
- The Mission: The day is to:
- Advocate for research on new treatments and possible vaccines.
- Mobilize international funds and support.
- Thank people for progress in reducing world mortality rates.
- Urge an international campaign towards total elimination.
LLINs distribution is acknowledged worldwide as one of the most cost-effective preventive measures for malaria epidemiology. The Ministry of Health and its partners are taking a decisive step towards a South Sudan where no child or adult has to face this preventable disease by advancing the delivery of these nets to the most vulnerable in the country. To this end as part of this national campaign the Ministry urges all citizens to ensure that they are receiving and using insecticide nets correctly;
