Juba, South Sudan, 27th November 2024 - The Ministry of Health Celebrates the Impact of UNICEF Country Representative Dr. Hamida Lasseko as She Bids Farewell
In a heartfelt gathering held at Juba Pyramid Continental Hotel and attended by honourable ministers of Education, Health, Interior, and staff, the Ministry of Health honoured Dr Hamida Lasseko, the dedicated UNICEF Country Representative, as she embarks on her next chapter.
Her tenure has marked significant contributions to public health initiatives and collaboration between the Ministry and UNICEF. The farewell event highlighted her achievements and the impact of her work in the country.
In a testimonial, Honourable Yolanda Awel Deng praised Ms Hamida's leadership role within the health sector during hardships and challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic 2020-2021.
“Under Ms. Hamida's dynamic leadership, UNICEF has evolved into a crucial partner in strengthening the health sector across South Sudan. Her visionary approach has led to developing and implementing impactful health initiatives to improve healthcare accessibility and quality for vulnerable populations”. Honourable Awel noted.
Through strategic collaborations and innovative programs, UNICEF has achieved transformative changes that address critical health challenges, ultimately enhancing the well-being of countless individuals and people in the country.
In her farewell remark, UNICEF Country Representative Dr. Hamida Lasseko reflected on her tenure in South Sudan, highlighting the challenges and achievements during her three-and-a-half-year service. She emphasised the importance of collaboration with local ministries, particularly the Ministry of Education and Health, to revive protection programs for children.
“I arrived in the country in 2021, facing the challenges of the post-COVID era. My sisters expressed their concerns, and I felt overwhelmed, wondering, "What am I supposed to do now?" It was disheartening to realise they didn’t want to see me. In response to my turmoil, I began to pray and reflected on my purpose. It became clear that my mission was to help the children of South Sudan. This felt particularly meaningful as it marked my return to Africa, my last assignment on the continent. I embraced this calling, deeply connected to the land and its people”. Dr. Hamida explained.
Dr Hamida also expressed her gratitude and thanked the South Sudan government for its support. She conveyed appreciation for the opportunity to serve and expressed her intention to return in the future.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Government of South Sudan for the remarkable opportunity I have received. I recently had a meaningful face-to-face meeting with His Excellency, the President, who underscored the significance of collaboration. He greeted me warmly, stating, "You are a Tanzanian who has come here. I encourage you to help us work alongside my people and support the children of this nation." I am dedicated to doing everything within my power to assist”. Dr. Hamida said.
